During Japan’s Middle Ages, an old road known as the Abaka Highway, connected Fukui’s provincial capital at Ichijodani with the ancient Hakusan Heisenji temple town in Katsuyama. It was the shortest route between the two towns, and it played a vital role in their strategic defense and economies. The route began in Abaka Town, snaked up over the mountains to Saradani Town before reaching Shikatani Town in Katsuyama City. There, an old castle known as Saikouji was built by an Asakura general named Kageaki.
