The mighty Asuwagawa River, which flows through downtown Fukui City, originates high atop Mt. Kanmuriyama on the border with Gifu Prefecture. Flowing through the scenic towns of Ikeda and Miyama, the river has played an important role in the prefecture’s development. It was used as a transportation route for boats, carrying shakudani stone from Mt. Asuwayama to the castle town of Ichijodani upriver. In addition, stone was sent down river to Mikuni where it was shipped nationwide.
