Hidden in the tranquil foothills behind Daianzenji Temple lies the impressive Senjojiki Mausoleum, the final resting place of the early Matsudaira Clan warlords. The succession of towering memorial stones is striking. They are fitting reminders of the monumental figures of Yuki Hideyasu and his vassals, who rebuilt Fukui in the Edo Period. The blue-tinged shakudani stone is on full display here; in the tombstones, in the fence, and even in the mausoleum’s gates. It is said that 1,360 slabs were used to pave the floor.
